Service life, material waste and maintenance all matter. No material is automatically the most sustainable without comparing complete applications.
Look beyond a green label
An environmental profile considers production, construction, use and end of life. Ask for a current environmental product declaration, or EPD. Compare equivalent functions, quantities and assessment periods rather than kilograms alone.
Assess what can be retained
Sound tiles or slates need not be replaced merely for a different colour. Reuse still requires condition, dimension and fixing checks. Retaining wet or poorly bonded layers can cause premature failure; technical suitability comes first.
Service life is not a fixed expiry date
Installation, exposure, maintenance and junction quality affect service life. We do not give universal guaranteed lifetimes. Ask for a supported expectation for the specified system and identify components needing earlier maintenance or replacement.
Environmental questions by material
| Material | Possible approach | Ask for evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Tiles and slate | Retain or reuse sound units | Condition, rejection rate and matching replacements |
| Bitumen and plastic membranes | Consider repairability and take-back arrangements | Product EPD, separability and actual collection |
| Metals | Repairable details and separate dismantling | Production impact and reuse scenario |
| Bio-based materials | Consider renewable feedstock with complete performance | Origin, additives, moisture behaviour and declaration |
| Insulation | Compare at equal thermal performance | Rd, quantity, build-up and product data |
| Green roof | Planting and water storage as additional functions | Structural suitability, maintenance and layers |
