Mark each penetration on a roof overview and identify its purpose only if known. If installation work is also planned, agree who removes, installs and seals each component. A top-view photograph does not reveal the complete connection below. Ask which parts were assessed and what remains uncertain. Keep the roof overview and installer details with the maintenance file.
List every penetration
Use a simple roof sketch to identify visible penetrations and their likely functions. Include photographs taken safely. Mark uncertainties rather than guessing, so the roofer and any installer can agree which component is involved.
Coordinate other planned work
Mention new or altered installations before roofing begins. Ask who disconnects, adapts and reconnects equipment. The roof connection and the operation of the attached installation can be the responsibility of different trades.
Assess the waterproofing connection
Ask which visible and concealed parts can be checked and what is retained. A small fitting may have several surrounding connections. The proposal should identify the fitting and its interface with the proposed roof covering.
Make maintenance traceable
Keep a labelled overview and product information where available. Record changes to a fitting during roof work. Later inspections can then identify the correct component without relying on a close-up whose location is unclear.
Identify function and responsibility
Record which installation belongs to each penetration where known. Confirm who may remove or alter it and who checks its operation afterwards. Roofing work does not automatically include servicing the connected ventilation or other equipment.
Avoid omitted details during renewal
For every penetration, state retained, replaced or removed in the plan. Ask how it connects to the new covering. Keep the final record so a later installer can see the completed situation and any altered components.
